    Consciousness of difference, of being Aboriginal, is fundamental to Julie Dowling and the stories she re-tells through her paintings. The discovery came when the twin's young cousin Dawn, visiting from Broome, was playing with the four year olds and turned to them and asked "Didn't you know you were Aboriginal?" The realization of her or his own uniqueness is a key point in any child's life, of course, but this question marked not just that sense of individuality that comes to all, but Julie's status as an indigenous person and a fundamental difference from most other Australians.
