Albert Julius Olsson
  • Biography

Julius Olsson was a renowned British maritime artist who became an important figure in the St. Ives School. He studied first in London before moving to Cornwall in 1886 at the age of twenty-six. It was here that Olsson set up a studio overlooking the sea and his love for the water developed becoming a keen yachtsman and deep sea diver.

In 1888 Julius Olsson established an artist’s club for painters who like himself were transfixed by the atmosphere of the sea. This included Arnesby Brown, Adrian Stokes and Algernon Talmage. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1890 and became a member of the New English Art Club in 1891.
