Biography
Sparmann received his first artistic training from Johann Samuel Arnhold, a noted flower painter at the drawing school of the Royal Porcelain Manufactory in Meissen. From 1822 to 1824, he studied at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts under Johan Christian Clausen Dahl, whose mentorship helped shape Sparmann’s development as a landscape painter.
On Dahl’s recommendation, Sparmann was appointed drawing teacher to Queen Hortense de Beauharnais and her son Prince Louis Napoléon (later Napoléon III), from 1824 to 1826. He spent summers at Arenenberg Castle on Lake Constance and winters in Rome, where exposure to classical and alpine scenery enriched his visual vocabulary.
