From 1921-23, he held an apprenticeship as a decorative painter and studied from 1924-30 at the Dresden Academy under Richard Dreher. From 1930-31 Schafer took a study visit to Paris and from 1961-70 was active as Lecturer at the Academy of Fine Arts Dresden.
