    Karl Hagedorn was a modernist artist born in Berlin in an unknown year. His family moved to England in 1905, where he later trained at the Manchester School of Art and the Slade School of Art. In 1912, he studied at Maurice Denis' school of art in Paris, where he was exposed to the futurist and cubist movements. He met Matisse in the same year, which was a significant encounter for him. Hagedorn returned to England before the war and became an important figure in the Manchester art scene. He served in WWI and exhibited his work at various galleries including the Salon D'Automne in Paris, the Royal Academy, the Allied Artists Association, and the Fine Art Society.
