  • Biography

    Born in western Styria, Karl Stark studied sculpture under W. Gösser at the Grazer arts school, and painting with Rudolf Szyszkowitz. In 1947 he settled in Vienna and studied painting with Herbert Boeckl at the Academy of Fine Arts.

    His work was inspired by the early Austrian Expressionism and artists like Richard Gerstl and Jean Egger. In 1951 he moved to Carinthia, and the local landscapes would become the main motives of the artist. At the same time, he held a teaching position at the Linz School of Applied Arts.

    In 1958, Stark returned to Vienna. In 1980 he founded the Galerie Austria at St. Stephen's Square. Since the mid-1990s, it has been run by Stark’s son. Works by Stark are in the collections of...
