    The Irish-born Karl O'Lynch van Town attended the Graz Academy of Drawing from 1888 to 1890, and then studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and Munich Art Academy. From 1904, he was a member of the Hagenbund.

    He is mainly known for his marine paintings and often spent time on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea.

    He was friends with the painters Alfred Zoff and Eduard Ameseder and is considered one of the most important Styrian artists of the turn of the Century.
