She attended summer studios of Anna Hyatt Huntington and took lessons from Charles Grafly at the Boston Museum School. Huntington and Brenda Putnam, both working in New York, were especially encouraging to her. In 1947, she married Carrington Weems and had exhibited as Katharine Ward Lane.
