Ryozo Kato
  • Biography from Christie's Shanghai

    Ryozo Kato (b.1964)

He was born in Gifu, Japan in 1964. In 1987, he graduated from Tama Art University with a degree in nihonga.

By employing stone pigments and delicate brush strokes over softly color-washed paper, Kato has developed his own technique of creating the vision of dense foliage. Kato uses soft, small black lines to delineate the structure and he enhances the composition by layering and blending blue, green and yellow colors. He uses complementary colors to evoke gradating tonalities that set the harmonious mood of the painting. The scenery is blurred with haze, and there is a sense of fairy-like mood and mysteriousness in it.

He has participated in group exhibitions such as Saiji-kai Exhibition, Saihodo Gallery, Tokyo, Japan (2008, 2009, 2010).

His prizes include the honorable mention award from Omishima Art Museum, Omishima, Japan (2001); grand prize from Mont Deus Cultural Exchange Museum, Hida Kuraiyama, Japan (2003) and grand prize from Toyohashi Bijutsu Club, Toyohashi, Japan (2008).
