    An illustrator working in London during the era of the popular style of Art Nouveau and later in Hollywood for Disney Studios, Kay Nielsen was born in Copenhagen, Denmark. There he did much stage design. He studied art in Paris at Academies Julian and Colarossi, and after service in the Royal Danish Guards, worked in London for the "Tatler" and also illustrated many books.

    By the mid-1930s he had settled in southern California and worked again as a stage designer. In 1938, he became affiliated with the Disney Studios. (The Bald Mountain sequence in "Fantasia" was his creation.)

    He was a resident of Santa Barbara in the 1930s and by 1942 had moved to Altadena where he remained until his death on June 21, 1957.
