  • Biography

The landscape and genre painter was born in Haarlem and became a member of the local painters’ guild in 1651. Molenaer was specialized in peasant motifs, coastal and winter landscapes as well as small genre scenes. He was probably a friend or the brother of Jan Miense Molenaer (c.1610-1669), a famous student of Frans Hals. A selection of his works is preserved today at the Alte Pinakothek in Munich, at the Van der Heydt Museum in Wuppertal and at the Wallraf Richartz Museum in Cologne. (cbo)
