Chen Lai-Hsing was born in Taiwan in 1949, and graduated from National Arts School (now National Taiwan University of Arts). Due to his growing-up experience in a small town, Chen not only shows great compassion toward Taiwanese ordinary people's life, but also sensitively perceives spiritual conflicts in modern society. Chen's inspiration comes from every social changes of the environment, which reflect into his artwork. In his early paintings, there is a distinct appearance influenced by expressionism, while recent series touches life's conflicts through bold, strong colors and exaggerated distortions. Chen's strong affection upon this island leads him to participate in Taiwan's social movement. He goes into every corner, whether street or alley, countryside or big city, mountain or seashore, to draw and full-heartedly feel this land.
