    Mechelaere was a painter and etcher of cityscapes, landscapes, interiors, portraits and still life. He was hearing impaired since his early youth. He was educated at the Academy of Bruges (1907, Ed. Van Hove) and NHISKA (F. Courtens and J. De Vriendt) and worked mainly in Bruges, Damme, Lissewege and Bruges polders.

    Mechalaere is considered one of the most important figures of the Bruges School, and his works are currently on display in the Groeninge museum in Bruges.
