About Leslie Hurry

  • Biography from Modern Art Auctions

Leslie Hurry, from the United Kingdom, lived from 1909 to 1978. Hurry was one of the Neo-Romantic group of artists in the 1940s, which included Graham Sutherland, John Piper, Keith Vaughan, John Craxton, Michael Ayrton, etc. These days he is probably better known for his theatre designs. He regarded theatre designs preferable to teaching. However, they have overshadowed his normal paintings, which he considered to be his best work. The Tate Gallery collection includes several of his paintings.
  • Biography from Lyon & Turnbull

Leslie Hurry was an artist who produced a series of ink drawings during the early 1940s based on imaginary kings, queens, and altarpieces. These drawings were accompanied by a long poetic text and bound together to form a private book entitled The Journey for Grace Sholto Douglas. Hurry's work displayed a degree of Blakean doom-laden symbolism and was part of the revival of a British neo-Romantic movement in the years directly after the Second World War.
