  • Biography

Even perhaps before the word "Zen" became a buzzword, Lao had already been producing minimalist abstract works that exude a sense of serenity and calmness with strong Oriental undertones.

Lao Lianben Tan (21 Apr 1948) was the first artist who introduced the use of found objects and indigenous materials in assemblage in the 1960s. For example, he superimposed twigs and small branches on carved and etched wooden panels. In his works there is often a play of contrasts between free organic shapes and the geometric order of the panel design. As in one of his work, the twig is slightly charred by fire, signifying the destruction of the forests.
