    Lili Ország was born in 1926 in Budapest, Hungary, and died in 1978. She was a Hungarian painter whose work is closely associated with the post-war avant-garde and the intellectual circles of the European School.

    Ország completed her studies at the Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts between 1945 and 1950. From 1950 until her death, with only a short break, she worked as the designer of the State Puppet-Theatre in Budapest, where she collaborated with a number of artists connected to the European School.

    In 1953, she met Endre Bálint, whom she regarded as her master and the first to truly understand and acknowledge her work. Her artistic vocabulary was deeply shaped by her travels: Slavic mysticism and icon-painting influenced her ...
