Lisel Oppel was born in 1897 in Bremen. She was influenced by impressionism, Otto Modersohn and Paula Modersohn Becker. Oppel studied in Bremen and Munich at Ernst Müller-Scheessel. Since 1919 she was based in Worpswede. As an independent artist who refused entry to the Reich Chamber of Culture, she was only able to paint to a limited extent from 1933 to 1945. The largest part of her oeuvre with landscapes, portraits, rural scenes and children's motifs was therefore created in the 1950s.
