About Lorenzo Chavez

  • Biography

Having spent his boyhood in Albuquerque, New Mexico, the land of his Spanish ancestors, he had a maternal grandmother who was the famous potter, Maria Martinez. His early art teacher was Frank McCulloch, and from visiting museums, Chavez was inspired by New Mexico painters, Ernest Blumenschein and Peter Hurd.

In 1980, Chavez moved to Denver and attended the Colorado Institute of Art and supported himself with commercial illustration. Finally he was successful enough to make a living from his plein-aire, pastel landscape painting.

Lorenzo Chavez won the Dianne B. Bernhard Silver Medal Award for Excellence at the Third Annual Pastel 100 Competition.
