    Louis van Engelen was born in 1856 in Lier, Belgium, and died in 1940 in Antwerp. He was a Belgian painter known for his genre scenes, landscapes, animal paintings, and portraits, often rendered in a cool, precise style with clear color planning.


    Van Engelen studied at the Academy of Antwerp under Charles Verlat, with whom he collaborated on large-scale panoramas, including the Panorama of Waterloo and the Panorama of Moscow. He also worked under the French painter Dumarescq on the Panorama of the Battle of Bapaume.


    In 1882, Louis van Engelen traveled to Russia with Verlat, and in 1883 to North America and the Congo. He later joined an expedition to the Kerguelen Islands in the Indian Ocean. His...
