    Mannumi Shaqu (1917 - 2000)

    A prominent early modern Inuit sculptor and carver, Mannumi Shaqu was born near Cape Dorset (Baffin Island), Nunavut, Canada and lived in Nunavut his whole life (he also lived in Coral Harbour (Southampton Island) and Frobisher Bay (Baffin Island), both in Nunavut). His carvings have been included in a number of landmark exhibitions and his works are in several Canadian museum collections. His sculpture Mother and Child was given to Princess (now Queen) Elizabeth on the occasion of her November 1951 visit to Canada. It was one of the first times a work of Inuit art was presented as an official gift by Canada. (1)(2)
