    Marcel Mariën was born in Antwerp, Belgium in 1920. He discovered Surrealism in 1935 through two paintings by René Magritte and joined the Surrealist group in 1937 at the age of 17. Mariën was a versatile artist who experimented with different media and created works that played with the viewer's perception of reality. He was also a writer, poet, and theorist, and authored several books including the first monograph of René Magritte. Mariën's most famous work is L'introuvable, a set of single-lens glasses. His works are housed in prominent modern art institutions around the world
