    As an artist, Margaret Olley was best known for oil paintings of home interiors, still lifes of carefully arranged objects such as bowls, plates, jugs, flowers and fruit. She painted from an exuberant palette influenced by Pierre Bonnard and her career was supported by high-profile collectors, including the satirist Barry Humphries, who once praised her for standing bravely against the tide of "sterile abstraction and slapdash expressionism" and scorning the "artist poseurs and charlatans who infest arts bureaucracies".
