Maria Tapta was born in Koscian, Poland, in 1926 and died in Brussels, in 1997. She studied at the National School of Visual Arts of La Cambre in Brussels, then staying in the Belgian Congo from 1950 to 1960. She directs the soft sculpture workshop at La Cambre 1976 to 1990, and the workshop "Structure" of the Foundation of Tapestry in Tournai from 1980. Trained in traditional weaving art, the artist is recognized - internationally - as one of the main architects of renewal of the tapestry.
