    Marianne Stokes, nee Preindlesberger, met Adrian Stokes in Pont Aven, Brittany in 1883 and married the following year. Born in Austria, Marianne had studied in Munich and Paris. She visited Pont Aven, a poor isolated, rural community, to find, with many of her contemporaries, sources for a 'plein air' social realism, subject matter popularized by Jules Bastien Lepage and Jean Francois Millet.

    Marianne and Adrian Stokes visited Cornwall in 1886 at the behest of Stanhope Forbes, founder of the Newlyn School. They remained in Cornwall moving to the artist community in St. Ives where they lived through the 1890's.

    By the early years of the twentieth century they were living in Chelsea and in 1921 moved to Grantham Place off Park...
