    Marinus Adrianus Koekkoek, who came from an important family of painters, studied with his brother Barend Cornelis in Kleve in 1837-39, which had a lasting influence on him. From 1839 he was based in Hilversum and Amsterdam, where he created a significant oeuvre of landscape paintings and exhibited them in The Hague, Amsterdam and Leeuwarden.

    Marinus Adrianus was the younger brother of Barend Cornelis Koekkoek who was also his tutor. In the past his work has been often passed off as his brother's work. However his landscapes are more spacious with large open skies, less wooded and with figures that are subordinate to the vast panoramic landscape.
