About Marvin Cone

  • Biography

    Marvin Cone was born and raised in Cedar Rapids, where in 1906 he began a lifelong friendship with Grant Wood. He graduated from Coe College in 1914 and then studied for several years at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

    World War I interrupted his studies, and after being stationed near New Mexico, Cone left for France in 1917, where he served for several years as an interpreter. In 1919, Cone studied for about five months at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Montpellier, France. When he returned to Cedar Rapids that year, he continued to pursue his interest in art.
