About Matthew Barney

    Conceptualist artist, Matthew Barney became quite a sensation among post modernists in the late 20th century by staging fictions through installations, filmed performances and stylized videos.

    Barney was born in San Francisco, California in 1967. While attending Yale University, receiving a B.A. in 1989, he modeled for J. Crew and Company for a part-time job. He then settled in New York City. Barney had his first solo show, a fusion of sculpture and psycho-sexual performance art, in New York at Barbara Gladstone Gallery in October, 1991. At the Venice Biennale of 1993, he was awarded "the Europe 2000" Prize, and in 1996, the Hugo Boss Award in honor of Hugo Boss, men's clothing designer.
