    Matthias Scheits was born in Hamburg in 1640.  He studied under Philipps Wouwerman in Holland but was influenced by Adriaen van Ostade and David Teniers the Younger as well. Scheits also worked as an illustrator. He is especially known for the ‘Scheits'sche Bibel’, a bible printed in Lüneburg in 1672.  He created 152 drawings for this bible used as templates for the etchings.  Today most of his works can be found in the Hamburger Kunsthalle.
