    Born in 1902 in Johannesburg, South Africa, Maud Sumner lived in South Africa, London, England, and Paris France. She died in 1985 in Johannesburg.

    Sumner completed a Masters in Literature at Oxford University in 1925, and studied at the Westminster School of Art in London from 1926-32. Until 1938 she studied in Paris under Naum Aronson, George Devallières, Maurice Denis and Roger Bissières. She returned to South Africa shortly after the outbreak of the Second World War, and became a member of the New Group between 1941 and 1946.

    From 1947-53 she returned to Paris, and also maintained a studio in London. Between 1962 and 1978 she divided her time between Paris and Johannesburg, but after 1978 gave up traveli...
