    Maurice L. Bower (1889-1980)

    Maurice Lincoln Bower was born in Ohio in 1889 , and showed an ability to draw at an early age. His family moved to Philadelphia where Bower attended High School and spent a year at Penn State. Upon learning of classes being taught by Howard Pyle alumnus Walter Everett, he switched to the School of Industrial Art in Philadelphia. While still a student he began to be published in St. Nicholas magazine. This was followed by four years working for the Hearst Syndicate. Later he became a medical illustrator in the U.S. Army during WWI.

    Bower had always wanted to live and work in Paris, and when offered the opportunity by the McCall Corporation in 1926, he accepted at once...
