    Max Martens was a German landscape painter born in 1887 in Braunschweig. He studied at the Braunschweig School of Applied Arts and later at the teaching institute at the Kunstgewerbemuseum Berlin. He worked as a church painter and craftsman in various cities before turning to landscape painting in 1918. He had his first stay in Gstadt am Chiemsee in 1928 and subsequently had regular stays there. He was a member of the Reich Association of German Artists and the Lower Saxony Artists' Association. He was sent to the Great German Art Exhibition in the House of German Art in Munich from 1938-44. He was bombed out in Munich in 1943 and relocated to Gstadt am Chiemsee.
