    Max Mayrshofer was born in 1875 in Munich, Germany, and became one of the notable draughtsmen, portrait painters, and lithographers associated with the Munich Impressionist and Jugendstil circles. Mayrshofer trained at the Kunstgewerbeschule beginning in 1890 and later studied at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste under Otto Seitz and Karl von Marr, as well as at the private school of Anton Ažbe. His early work as an illustrator for Die Jugend, Simplicissimus, and Hyperion placed him among the artists who helped define the visual language of Munich Jugendstil.

    Mayrshofer developed a reputation for expressive drawings, portraits, landscapes, and still lifes, marked by a lively, gestural line and a strong sensitivity to atmosphere. Hi...
