    The following, submitted May 2005, is from Louis Marano, who wrote: "I am in possession (minus its cover) of the February, 1945, issue of Ladies Home Journal -- Vol. LXII, No. 2. The Contents page has a photo of Kopf in front of a painting of a black man. Below the photo is the text:

    Maxim Kopf, who painted our cover design, says, "I never wanted to be anything but a painter, an ambition in which I received no encouragement whatever from my family. But my father finally allowed me to enter the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, whose entrance examinations I had already secretly taken and passed.
