    Mehdi Qotbi was born in 1951 in modest circumstances of the Takaddoum neighborhood in Rabat, Kenitra and entered military school. In a Scout club called the Tigers, he drew on a wall a tiger whose power amazed spectators, though he had never drawn or painted. This was the starting point.

    He left high school and his family, trying various trades. He was admitted to the School of Fine Arts in Rabat. He was helped by the painter Jilali Gharbaoui, one of the largest Moroccan painters, one of the first non-figurative. Then he decided to leave for France.
