About Michael Illingworth

  • Biography

Michael Illingworth (1932-1988) was the angry young man of conservative Auckland art. His early career was a terrible struggle with virtually no support from the art establishment, which detested him. There was the famous tale of Illingworth eating half a banana for lunch and the second half for supper.

He managed to escape this environment by moving to England, where he met the Italian surrealist Enrico Baj, who influenced him for the rest of his life. He is now considered a major New Zealand artist and can fetch huge money at auction. He sadly died young of cancer in 1988.
