Mikhail Balunin studied at the Drawing School of the Society for the Encouragement of Arts in St. Petersburg during the 1890s. A member of the Association of Russian Painters and the Association of Petrograd Artists, he specialized in genre scenes and landscapes, often depicting quiet moments of everyday life in Russia’s towns and villages.

Since 1907, reproductions of his works appeared in the magazine Niva and as postcards issued by Richard Publishers in St. Petersburg. From 1906 onward, he regularly participated in exhibitions of leading artistic societies, including the Society of Russian Watercolorists, the Petrograd Society of Artists, and the A. I. Kuindzhi Society.
