    Painter, graphic artist, monumentalist. In 1876 he entered the Moscow School of Painting and Painting, where he studied with E.S. Sorokina, V.G. Perova, I.M. Pryanishnikova, V.E. Makovsky. In 1881 – 1884 studied at the Academy of Arts with V.P. Vereshchagina, V.I. Jacobi, P.P.. Chistyakova. Member of the TPHV (since 1896). Founding member of the SRH. Since 1898 - academician, since 1910 - full member of the Academy of Arts. In 1907, the artist’s first personal exhibition was held in St. Petersburg. Retrospective exhibitions of the artist's works were held in Moscow (1943, 1947, 1952, 1962, 1990), Ufa (1962, 1983, 1992), Leningrad (1962), Kyiv (1963). Honored Artist of the RSFSR (1942), laureate of the USSR State Prize (1941). The works are in the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum, the Kiev Museum of Russian Art, and in many museum and private collections.

    Mikhail Nesterov studied at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture (MSPSA), where he attended the classes of V.G. Perov, A. K. Savrasov and I. M. Pryanishnikov.

    In St. Petersburg he studied at the Academy of Arts, where he was a student of P. P. Chistyakov. In 1896 he joined the Peredvizhniki. Later, his works were deeply concerned with the exploration of the religious idea of the ‘Russian Soul’.

    Nesterov's oeuvre includes landscapes and portraits, monumental wall paintings, as well as historical-religious compositions. A selection of his works is preserved, for example, in the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow. (cbo)
