    The following biography is based on a 1978 interview with the artist by Dennis Barrie for the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution. The interview was held at the Oxbow Summer School of Painting in Saugatuck, Michigan:

    Artist Statement: "I am very much a Matisse and Picasso person. Some people could never accept that. With me it was a total acceptance in a very short period, within two weeks."

    Of Japanese heritage, Miyoko Ito became a Chicago-based watercolor and oil painter and lithographer in modernist styles.

    She came from a family where her father had emigrated to Vallejo, California and, thanks to a benefactor, earned a Master's Degree in psychology at Berkeley University. He returned to Japan, married...
