    Nathanael Schmitt (1847-1918) was a German artist born in Heidelberg into a family of artists. He was a portrait and genre painter who studied at the Academy in Karlsruhe. Schmitt was active in Rome from 1872 to 1880, then in Saarbrücken from 1881 to 1886, and finally settled in Karlsruhe. He painted a portrait of Pope Pius IX while in Rome and worked in various cities throughout his career. Schmitt was the son and pupil of Georg Philipp and the brother of Guido Philipp.
