About Nicholas Dixon

  • Biography

Nicholas Dixon was a miniature portrait artist from England who was appointed as Charles II's 'lymner in ordinary' in 1673, succeeding Samuel Cooper. He had access to the Royal Collections as he was also the Keeper of the King's Picture Closet, which allowed him to continue the tradition of cabinet miniatures. However, he lost his Royal position in 1678 and his career faltered. In 1698, he attempted to sell his cabinet of limnings by lottery, but the venture failed. The pictures were mortgaged and later transferred to John Holles, Duke of Newcastle. Thirty of these miniatures remain at Welbeck Abbey through inheritance.
