Nicholas Oswald Roos, known as Nico Roos, was a South African artist who was greatly influenced by the rural panoramas of the Northern Cape and Namibia during his childhood. He studied art in school and received instruction in painting and drawing from various artists, including Otto Schröeder. Roos pursued his BA in Fine Arts from the University of Pretoria, where he later obtained his master's degree in 1970 and his doctorate in 1974. He became a professor and the Head of the Fine Arts Department at the University of Pretoria from the late 1970s to 1999.
