    Nicolaas van der Waay was a Dutch artist known for decoration, painting, watercolor, drawing and lithography He was active between 1870 and 1936. He designed effigies (portraits) for coins and stamps, including those of the young Queen Wilhelmina. The design of the first official banknote of 10 guilders (1904-1920) was of his hand. Van der Waay is best known for the allegorical representations he made for the Golden Coach, the special coach of the Dutch King.

    Van der Waay's took his early art education from LJH (Louis) Koopman, whose daughter he would later marry later. His work covers genre painting, landscapes, portraits, historical scenes and cityscapes.
