    Nils Kreuger was born in Kalmar in 1858. He began his studies at the Royal Academy in Stockholm in 1874. At the Academy he started a lifelong friendship with Richard Bergh and Karl Nordström. He soon left the teaching at the Academy to learn from Edvard Perséus, whose painting school opened in 1876. Perséus was one of the opponents against the Academy. Kreuger was later involved in the formation of the Artist Association together with Richard Bergh and Karl Nordström in 1886 and participated extensively in its exhibitions. In 1881 Kreuger traveled to the capital of Paris and joined the following year to the Scandinavian colony in Grez, where the French open air painting principles were applied.
