About Olof Arenius

  • Biography

After studying theology at the University of Uppsala, Arenius turned to painting and studied with David von Krafft. Probably in 1729 he went to England and studied with the portrait and court painters Godfrey Kneller and Michael Dahl.

When he returned to Sweden in 1736, he was appointed by King Frederik I. court painter "about the Hessian state" and became a popular portrait painter of the nobility (see Svenskt biografiskt handlexikon(SBH), 1906, Vol I, p. 42).

Arenius is represented by a large number of portraits in the National Museum in Stockholm.
