Born in 1944, Ørnulf Opdahl is old enough to actually be a modernist in the 1960s and paint non-figurative images. But after working with several different image expressions in the 1970s, he began to measure abstract landscape painting from his childhood landscape around Godøy outside Ålesund. Some of these images glide smoothly into the Norwegian landscape painting tradition, but the best lies between the landscape and pure abstraction. The first thing to note is that there is considerable sensuality in the pigment - he has also used a number of different techniques to achieve a physical presence that will make us sense painting as painting.
