    Oscar Hullgren was a Swedish artist known for his marine paintings. He was an innovator in the field, focusing on the water itself as the main subject rather than using ships as staffage. He was influenced by English masters such as Constable and Turner, but developed his own style characterized by more drama. Hullgren was born in Sweden and went on his first study trip abroad to England. He was influenced by Paul Gauguin and the painting in the auction was a gift to Jean Gauguin, son of the French painter. Hullgren signed the painting with the dedication "To Jean Gauguin From Oscar Hullgren". Jean Gauguin followed in his father's footsteps but specialized in sculpture and settled in Denmark.
