About Oskar Moll

  • Biography

The painter Oskar Moll was born in 1875 in Brieg, Silesia. He started painting at the age of 22 years, first as an autodidact and finally as a student of Lovis Corinth, Walter Leistikow and Henri Matisse, where he was also involved in the founding of the Académie Matisse in 1908. In 1914 he became a member of the 'Free Secession in Berlin', followed by a professorship at the Academy of Arts and Crafts, where he was Director until its closure in 1932. He then taught at the Dusseldorf Art Academy, but was dismissed in 1933 by the Nazis from the civil service. Back in Berlin, an exhibition prohibition was granted and he was defamed as a 'degenerate artist'.
