He began studying art at Virginia Commonwealth University (formerly the Richmond Professional Institute of the College of William & Mary) after a tour of duty in the Navy. He also attended the California College of Arts & Crafts in Oakland. He completed his BFA and MFA at Virginia Commonwealth University.
