Otmar Alt was born in Wernigerode, located in the Harz district of Germany. At the beginning of the 1950s he moved to Berlin, where he started an apprenticeship as window dresser and poster artist, after finishing school. In 1959 he decided to deepen his artistic training at the Berliner Meisterschule für Kunsthandwerk, where he graduated as a master student of Hermann Bachmann (1922-1995).
