Paul Echele
  • Biography

Paul Aichele was a German sculptor who studied at the School of Applied Arts in Stuttgart (Kunstgewerbeschule Stuttgart). In 1880, he continued his education at the Museum of Arts in Berlin (Kunstgewerbemuseum Berlin) and remained in Berlin for the rest of his life.

His most significant work is Sintflutbrunnen (Fountain of Floods), originally installed at Hamburger Platz in Berlin-Friedenau until 1931, before being relocated to Maybachplatz (renamed Perelsplatz in 1961). The sculpture powerfully depicts a naked man holding his fainting wife, while above them, a woman shields her child in the last refuge from rising floods.

Paul Aichele sculptures reflect a strong command of figurative composition and emotional depth.
